Week 98: Going with the Flow vs Pushing against the Current – #AlphaFemaleFriday

“ WEEK 98 / 133 – 133 WEEKS TO SUCCESS “

When should you take a hit and “suck it up” versus push against the status quo? If it’s a glaring problem that can be solved, speak up and find a solution. If the problem is relatively minor and more of an inconvenience than anything, it may be better to consider it as background disturbance to make room for more pressing matters. Whatever you do, make sure you’re not a complainer.

You know the type. They’re the Debby Downers of the world who waltz in, say their emotionally draining piece, and leave you feeling like you’ve got the world weighing down on your shoulders. Every problem of theirs becomes yours and suddenly your new name is Atlas. I’m all for collaboration and trying to figure out where the puzzle pieces fit. It’s a whole different kind of issue when you need to solve a thousand-piece puzzle with only 999 pieces. You can figure out 99% of the problem at hand—that last one percent may just have to be a general loss.

Real life examples: your company throws an annual event that takes months of planning and not one person who RSVP’d can attend due to a freak blizzard. Of course you want to scream and complain as tears are streaming down your very fancy black tie gown, but all you can do is eat the cake by yourself and catalog it under life lessons.  Or let’s say the main sewage lines at your establishment break down and it’s raining who-knows-what all over your office and the cute boutique next door.

There’s always something that can be learned—that sometimes we can be proactive, like keeping a careful eye on the weather forecast in the winter or doing preventative maintenance care with our engineering team. Other times, no matter how prepared we try to be or think we are, there will always be problems that we can’t anticipate. We must always keep our heads up high, and, with time, we learn the right times to accept and reflect vs. analyze and strategize.

About:

Each week, I take a tip from Lois P. Frankel’s book, Nice Girls Still Don’t Get the Corner Office, and explore how each of these tips affect myself and other women in similar positions on the road to becoming the women we want to be. There are far and few between who are a few steps behind me, and many more who are far advanced. I found that Lois P. Frankel’s advice applied to novice, intermediates, and experts alike. It helped me see that I was already doing right, served as a reminder to keep on doing what I was doing and how to keep that momentum going. The book also showed me areas where I could improve, and gave realistic tips to jump on board. There are a total of 133 tips, and explore one tip per week in a program I call: 133 Weeks to Success.

Join the movement using the hashtag #133WeeksToSuccess with posts which are posted every #AlphaFemaleFriday.
